Volunteer with Us
Volunteering at our School is truly a remarkable experience for anyone who wants to make a positive impact on the lives of local children.
By living with locals, you’ll also get a chance to experience authentic Cambodian village life. We offer many experiences for our volunteers. To start, you can teach English in morning and afternoon classes, engage in artsy activities, read books, play games, sing or dance with children, and bring joy and inspiration to their lives by simply showing up and being yourself. Moreover, our cultural exchange program immerses you in Cambodia’s rich culture and history. It’s a great way to give back to the community and an opportunity to explore the stunning beauty of Siem Reap and the surrounding countryside on a tuk-tuk.
We highly recommend our homestay options for those seeking an immersive Cambodian cultural experience while volunteering with us. To support the continued success of our community, we ask for a small donation fee of $8 per day (per person) for those who choose to stay with us at our homestays. This fee includes three meals plus water, coffee, and tea. Additionally, you’ll have the pleasure of waking up to delectable coconut waffles each morning and indulging in family-style lunches and dinners while learning the Khmer language and delving into authentic Cambodian village life.
You can take a private tour of the beautiful Angkor Wat or join other volunteers on a village tour to meet the locals and witness the changes as we continue to provide education and community services in Speankaek and Phum O villages. These options are an excellent way to take your volunteering experience to the next level and maximize your time in Siem Reap.
Plenty of volunteer opportunities are available for those interested in our upcoming projects, such as remodeling the library and classrooms, general maintenance of the school grounds, and participating in special projects, including building playgrounds and homes in the local community.

Volunteer FAQs
1. What volunteering opportunities are available at HELO School?
A: Volunteers can engage in a variety of activities such as teaching English, participating in creative activities (arts and crafts, storytelling, games, singing, and dancing), assisting with community services like remodeling the library and classrooms, and joining special projects such as building playgrounds and homes. Volunteers can also immerse themselves in Cambodian culture through local tours and community engagement.
2. Is there a cost to volunteer at HELO School?
A: Volunteering is free, but a small daily donation fee of $8 is requested for those staying in our homestays to cover meals (three meals per day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) with water, coffee, and tea) and basic amenities. This fee supports our community initiatives and helps sustain the school’s operations.
3. What are the requirements to volunteer with HELO School?
A: A love for working with children and a desire to make a positive impact are the primary requirements. Volunteers do not need prior teaching experience, as we value passion and commitment above all. Additionally, volunteers must provide a background check, a copy of their passport, and sign our Safeguarding and Code of Conduct Policy.
4. What are the accommodation options?
A: We offer homestay options that provide an immersive cultural experience with local families in either Speankaek Village or Phum O Village. Volunteers are provided a private or shared room, with private or shared bathroom facilities, depending on availability.
Each homestay includes comfortable amenities such as a fan, mosquito net, Wi-Fi, and immediate access to the classroom.
Staying with a local family offers a unique opportunity to experience Cambodian culture firsthand, while still being part of our community. If you prefer to stay in the city, we can also help arrange accommodations at preferred hotels, Airbnb, or hostels.
5. What meals are provided for volunteers?
A: Volunteers receive three meals daily: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, prepared in a family-style setting with authentic Khmer food. We strive to accommodate special dietary restrictions or preferences upon request, such as vegetarian options.
If you have specific dietary needs or preferences, you are also welcome to bring your own special foods to substitute during meals. Please inform us in advance about any dietary restrictions to ensure we can make the necessary arrangements.
Volunteers are free to explore local eateries as desired, but the daily fee still applies regardless of whether all meals are consumed at the homestay.
6. Where are your locations, and how far are they from key landmarks?
A: Home to HELO School, Speankaek Village is approximately a 60-minute tuk-tuk ride from Siem Reap International Airport, 30 minutes from the Angkor Wat temples, and 25 minutes from Pub Street, the vibrant center of Siem Reap.
Our extended center, Lotus Light Community Center for Advancement is located in Phum O Village, a 20-minute bicycle ride from HELO School, about 60 minutes from Siem Reap International Airport by tuk-tuk, and 35 minutes from Angkor Wat.

We also provide access to local medical referrals, emergency contact numbers, and first aid supplies on-site.
11. What visa type is acceptable for volunteering?
A: Volunteers can enter Cambodia with a tourist visa, which can be obtained upon arrival or online at least 7 days before arrival. If applying online, volunteers must provide a letter of confirmation (LOC) from us, which is available upon request. This LOC must be used exclusively for volunteering with our program. Any misuse of this document will be reported to immigration authories.
12. What should volunteers know about the weather, attire, and local customs?
A: Siem Reap has a tropical climate with hot and humid conditions year-round. We recommend wearing lightweight, breathable clothing to stay comfortable. Respecting local customs, including modest attire and appropriate behavior, is essential while volunteering. This helps ensure a positive and respectful experience for both volunteers and the local community.
For school and community settings:
